The Stan and Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize is an acquisitive art award and exhibition for Contemporary Australian Art open to all forms of art media (except photography).* *Photographic based artists are encouraged to enter our annual Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award. The Stan and Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize is managed by Gold Coast City Art Gallery and began its life in 1968 with the inaugural Gold Coast Art Prize. The Prize was first established with the intention of bringing the latest in contemporary art practice to what was then a relatively small tourism based community. From 1990 to 2006 the Prize was known as the Conrad Jupiters Art Prize and many significant works were acquired during this time including the first public gallery acquisitions of works by Adam Cullen and Guan Wei. As the collection has grown, so has the city. Over the 39 years of the Prize, the Gold Coast has experienced dramatic changes and growth, with a population now of over 500,000 people. The Prize has now entered a new era with the support of the Stan and Maureen Duke Foundation. Stan and Maureen Duke moved to Mackay in 1964. Stan was a General Surgeon and Urologist and Maureen was a General Physician with a special interest in Paediatrics. They were the first specialists in their fields to practice full time in Mackay. Maureen died of breast cancer in 1986, aged 51. Stan Duke is now retired on the Gold Coast. The support through the Foundation has allowed for a significant increase in the overall value of the prize. |
